Sierra Business Council (SBC) and Tahoe Silicon Mountain (TSM) are excited to announce the return of Tahoe Pitch Camp and Tahoe Pitch Showcase, a series of workshops culminating in a showcase for Tahoe/Truckee entrepreneurs, startups, and founders to present to the community their innovative companies & ideas.

On September 9th at 6pm at the Community Arts Center in Truckee, entrepreneurs will present their pitch deck for the chance to win prizes and receive feedback from an expert panel of judges, as well as the audience of community members.

Tahoe Pitch Camp, a series of workshops delivered by Sierra Business Council, is designed for entrepreneurs to hone their skills, learn about successful pitch techniques, and craft a winning pitch. Taught by SBC’s Kristin York and other seasoned mentors in collaboration with Tahoe Silicon Mountain, participants will hone their presentation skills and information into a five minute presentation, referred to as a pitch, identifying their value proposition and their organization’s capital needs. The Showcase will feature the finalists of the entrepreneurs from the Pitch Camp.

Entrepreneurs at any stage, startups, founders, and established businesses are all welcome to apply for Tahoe Pitch Camp and Showcase. In addition to the classes, entrepreneurs are encouraged to take advantage of free one-on-one consulting with SBC’s Sierra Small Business Development Center staff.

Kristin York is director of the Sierra Small Business Development Center, VP of Business Innovation at Sierra Business Council, and a Professor of Sustainable Urban Development and Implementation of Sustainable Business at Presidio Graduate School. Sierra Business Council pioneers innovative approaches and solutions to increase community vitality, economic prosperity, environmental quality, and social fairness in the Sierra Nevada.

June 10: Locomotives Past & Future

Volunteer and attend for free: https://signup.com/go/ZqXeaVN

Tahoe Silicon Mountain, a local network of entrepreneurs and professionals, is pleased to welcome Jerry Blackwill to present on Locomotives Past & Future.

One hundred fifty years ago railroad locomotives were complex mechanical machines powered by steam. Today that has been replaced by diesel electric or purely electric. And in the future, the world is moving toward high speed rail, vacuum tubes and mag-lev propulsion.

Jerry Blackwill is president of the Truckee Donner Railroad Society, board member of the new Museum of Truckee History, and member of Truckee's planning group for the 150th anniversary of the Golden Spike. He has done research and made presentations about the transcontinental railroad, the Truckee to Lake Tahoe railroad, and the area logging railroads. He also teaches economics at Truckee’s Sierra College. Previously he was board president of the Sierra State Parks Foundation.

Please join us at Mountain Minds Monday on Monday, June 10th from 6-8pm at Pizza on the Hill, in Tahoe Donner located at 11509 Northwoods Blvd., Truckee. Pizza and salad are available and we use a pay-what-you-can model ($5 minimum). Before and after the presentation, there will be time for networking.

This month’s event is sponsored by Holland & Hart LLP.

The event will also be available on YouTube as a livestream and after the event: bit.ly/YouTubeTSM

March 12th: Running A Global Nonprofit from a Mountain Town

Tahoe Silicon Mountain, a network of entrepreneurs and professionals who live and work in the Tahoe-Truckee area, is pleased to welcome Maria Tran to present at Mountain Minds Monday: “Running A Global Nonprofit from a Mountain Town”

Haunted by the photo of the body of a 3-year-old refugee washed up on a beach in Greece, Truckee’s Maria Tran decided to do something about it.

First as a volunteer, and next as co-founder of Sea of Solidarity, a nonprofit that supports grassroots humanitarian and educational projects in Greece and Turkey, Tran has taken advantage of technology to save lives, organize relief efforts, raise awareness, and to galvanize people from around the world (including Truckee) to volunteer.

Come hear Tran’s story of running a highly responsive global nonprofit from Truckee, including how she began as a product manager in Silicon Valley and transitioned to Truckee, how she’s been able to involve local students who will be traveling to Greece and how forming partnerships with local entrepreneurs can strengthen Sea of Solidarity’s efforts.

Mountain Minds Monday will be held on Monday, March 12th from 6-8 pm at Pizza on the Hill, in Tahoe Donner located at 11509 Northwoods Blvd., Truckee. Pizza and salad is available and we use a pay-what-you-can model ($5 minimum). Before and after the presentation, there will be time for networking.

The event will also be livestreamed and available online as it happens on YouTube: bit.ly/YouTubeTSM

This month’s event is sponsored by New Leaders, Holland & Hart LLP, Molsby & Bordner, LLP, and Mountain Workspace.
