September 13: Art, Technology, and Emotion: Techspressionism

Event: https://fb.me/e/223UL4w9v

In March of 2021, digital art made the news when an NFT (non-fungible token) sold for over $69 million dollars, all while digital art has been making an impact on the art world since the 1980’s. Please join Tahoe Silicon Mountain, a local network of entrepreneurs and professionals, on Monday, September 13th, where artist Colin Goldberg will present on Techspressionism, “an artistic approach in which technology is utilized as a means to express emotional experience.”

Colin Goldberg, Invictus, 2020. Acrylic and pigment print on linen. 48 x 36 inches.

Colin Goldberg, Kneeling Icon, 2004. Vector-based digital drawing. Dimensions variable.

In this presentation, Goldberg will give a brief introduction to Techspressionism and how it relates to artistic movements of the past. Goldberg will also discuss Techspressionism’s evolution through the pandemic and its relationship to the concept of Social Sculpture as developed by German artist Joseph Beuys in the 1970's. He’ll share his own personal development as an artist, including an overview of his oeuvre and how his involvement with technology has informed his studio practice as an artist, from the BBS scene of the 1980’s through Manhattan's Silicon Alley of the 1990’s to the NFT phenomenon of today.

Photographer: Rick Wenner
Goldberg was born in the Bronx, New York in 1971 to parents of Japanese and Jewish ancestry, both Ph.D. chemists. His grandmother Kimiye was an accomplished practitioner and instructor of Japanese Shodo calligraphy in Hawaii and Japan. In the 1990's, the artist supported his studio practice as a freelancer in NYC advertising agencies, coding, and designing some of the web's first consumer-facing sites and launching brands such as Snapple, GOLF Magazine, and Popular Science online. Goldberg holds a BA in Studio Art from Binghamton University and an MFA in Computer Art from BGSU. He is a recipient of grants from the Pollock-Krasner Foundation and the New York State Council on the Arts.

Goldberg's works reside in numerous private and public collections, including the permanent collections of the Pollock-Krasner House and Study Center, Stony Brook University Hospital and the Islip Art Museum, as well as the Anne and Michael Spalter Digital Art Collection, one of the world's largest private collections of early digital art.

Aug 8th: Be a Crowdfunding Success: An Alternative Way to Raise Capital for Small Business Owners

Tahoe Silicon Mountain, a network of technology professionals who live and work in the Tahoe-Truckee area, is pleased to welcome Casey Sibley to present: “Be a Crowdfunding Success: An Alternative Way to Raise Capital for Small Business Owners”

Crowdfunding is becoming a popular small business funding alternative to boot-strapping, self-funding, or applying for a small business loan.

Casey Sibley, owner and designer at Casey D. Sibley Art + Design, a Reno, NV based studio specializing in hand-painted and digitally printed textiles, will talk about how she planned, built, and launched a Kickstarter campaign to raise $10,000 to expand her business.

Sibley will discuss how, with both a limited budget and social reach, she went from an idea to launching her successful Kickstarter campaign. She’ll share with us how she chose the crowdfunding platform, built trust with her backers, got the word out, developed rewards, and kept momentum going as the funding deadline approached.

You can learn more about Sibley and her business here: caseydsibley.com

The meeting will be on Monday, August 8th, 6-8 pm at Pizza on the Hill, in Tahoe Donner at 11509 Northwoods Blvd., Truckee. A $5 fee includes pizza and salad. Before and after the presentation, there will be time for networking with other technology professionals who live and work in the Tahoe-Truckee region.

The event will also be livestreamed and available online as it happens on YouTube: bit.ly/YouTubeTSM

This month’s event is sponsored by New Leaders, Clear Capital and Holland & Hart LLP.

April 11th: Not Just for Programmers: How Hackathons Change Communities (or Even the World)

RSVP on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/events/1002330356483104/

We are pleased to welcome Joe Chavez to present: “Not Just for Programmers: How Hackathons Change Communities (or Even the World).”

If you’ve heard of a hackathon, you might imagine teams of programmers writing code. However, more recently, hackathons have drawn participants from multiple disciplines, including design, project management, business and engineering, who share an interest in a common theme, such as technology, civics or the environment. Teams engage in creative thinking to lay the foundation for solutions to the challenges presented at the hackathon.

Joe Chavez is the president of STEAM Initiative, a non-profit focused on science, technology, engineering, art and mathematics education initiatives and an organizer of the Reno Space Apps Hackathon, which is put on in association with NASA. Chavez will speak about why hackathons are good for growing a sense of community and how you can participate no matter your skillset.

You can learn more about the Space Apps Hackathon here: spaceappsreno.org

The meeting will be on Monday, April 11th, 6-8 pm at Pizza on the Hill, in Tahoe Donner at 11509 Northwoods Blvd., Truckee. A $5 fee includes pizza and salad. Before and after the presentation, there will be time for networking with other technology professionals who live and work in the Tahoe-Truckee region.

September 14, 2015: 3D Printing for Humans: Medical, Food and Space Applications, presented by Scott Summit

We are pleased to welcome Scott Summit to present: “3D Printing for Humans: Medical, Food and Space Applications.”

Newly available 3D printing tools mean that many of the methods we’ve used to improve human lives through development of prosthetics, casts, exoskeletons and more can be completely reconsidered.

These new technologies lend themselves not only to new approaches to problem solving, but also to new business models that allow the integration of design, medicine and technology. As a result of this, more meaningful and individualized solutions are being created.

Summit will explore applications where combinations of 3D printing and 3D scanning are applied, such as limb loss, scoliosis and exo-skeletal robotics. Next-generation applications, such as 3D printing in space, and the printing of food will also be discussed.

Scott Summit, Senior Director of Design at 3D Systems, which acquired the company he founded, Bespoke Innovations, in 2012, is a 3-time TEDx speaker. Summit’s designs have won international recognition and his clients have included Apple and Nike. Summit’s designs can be seen at the Cooper Hewitt Museum in NYC, where 10 products will be shown until May 2015.

The meeting will be on Monday, September 14th, 6-8 pm at Pizza on the Hill, in Tahoe Donner at 11509 Northwoods Blvd., Truckee. A $5 fee includes pizza and salad. Before and after the presentation, there will be time for networking with other technology professionals who live and work in the Tahoe-Truckee region.
