The 2020 ski season is just around the corner, but with COVID-19 limiting access to your favorite ski area, what is an avid skier to do? Backcountry skiing promises no lines, a limited number of people, and the allure of carving turns through fresh snow, but before you head out, it is essential to have a solid understanding of what it takes to get out there responsibly, sustainably, and safely.

Join Tahoe Silicon Mountain, a local network of entrepreneurs and professionals, on Monday, November 9th, for a panel discussion with a team of backcountry ski experts to help educate you on the essential things you need to know before you strap on your skins and head out. Some of the key topics we will cover:

• Avalanche Safety 101 and Local AVI I certification resources

Tahoe Silicon Mountain, a local network of entrepreneurs and professionals is pleased to have Nick Polinko present at the October 12th, virtual Mountain Minds Monday via livestream, using the Tahoe Silicon Mountain YouTube Channel to present on DIY Vanlife: Why you should or shouldn’t build your own camper van.

Over the last 10 years, the Vanlife Movement has gained significant popularity with outdoor enthusiasts seeking more off-the-grid and remote experiences. The biggest question when embarking on this lifestyle is whether or not to build your own rig. Polinko and his partner spent 18 months on the road traveling from San Francisco to Patagonia. After seeing a variety of approaches, they returned to custom build a 2019 Ford Transit Quigley 4x4. Polinko will break down the reasons to build your own van vs. buying a manufactured RV, and will discuss the different ways to tackle it on your own. At the end of this presentation, the viewer will have a good idea of the path they should take to get into the world of Vanlife. 

Polinko is a mechanical engineer, the former CEO of Rumpl, an outdoor blanket brand, and now the COO of Tahoe Modern, a staging and design firm based out of Truckee. Polinko’s first-hand experience of his time on the road can be heard on the podcast, Wheel Travel Far, or seen on Instagram @thelongcruise.

Stiving discusses impact pricing, the importance of pricing, and will educate us on how to price products to gain the optimum value for a company. Most companies can increase profits immensely by better understanding and implementing value-based pricing, but historically, this is a huge market problem. B2B companies do not always understand value or how to value their product. Stiving is passionate about pricing and education, and will discuss how to properly price a subscription service, which will help to educate the audience on how to see value and price appropriately.

Stiving is the Chief Pricing Educator at Impact Pricing LLC where he educates companies on pricing. The goal of this business is to find ways to help small businesses use pricing to capture more of the value they create. Prior to Impact Pricing, Stiving worked as a speaker and author, an instructor at Pragmatic Marketing, Director of Pricing at Maxim, and Pricing Expert at National Semiconductor. Stiving has a PhD. from UC Berkeley, Hass School of Business, an MBA from Santa Clara University, and a BS in Electrical Engineering from The Ohio State University.

Tahoe Silicon Mountain, a local network of entrepreneurs and professionals, is pleased to host Dr. John Henry Beyer, who will present on Climate Change: its causes, the severity, and how to help mitigate the impact of climate change. Beyer will present during the June 8th virtual Mountain Minds Monday via live stream using the Tahoe Silicon Mountain YouTube Channel.

Beyer will explain the science behind global warming and climate change in a way that is engaging and understandable. By representing large datasets visually, explaining complex concepts in accessible language, and drawing on psychologists’ research on reactions to disturbing information, Beyer will offer us a path forward under what might otherwise feel like insurmountable challenges.

Beyer received his Ph.D. in Geophysics from UC Berkeley, which led to a management career in geophysical exploration of geothermal energy sources for power generation. Beyer has managed geothermal exploration projects in Japan, Indonesia, and the Azores.

More recently Beyer has been involved in research management, developing technologies to mitigate climate change. At the California Energy Commission Beyer managed research focused on increasing efficiency and reducing emissions from electricity generation systems. At Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory he managed research on the geologic storage of carbon dioxide to reduce the carbon dioxide build up in the atmosphere.

Stock will focus on using Internally Porous Inorganic Amendments (IPIAs) to improve soils water holding ability, such that 20-30% less irrigation may be needed.

Water as a commodity is becoming more precious every day. Reducing water use and eliminating runoff are two key areas of importance for the Lake Tahoe basin. Stock will present on how IPIAs can be used in all soil conditions to allow a better air-water exchange for a more dynamic soil profile that increases water infiltration, water-holding and drainage. Using IPIAs means less water, less runoff, and a healthier lawn or garden.
