Jan 11, 2016 - Behind the Scenes at the Sierra Avalanche Center: Why Avalanche Forecasting Is More than a Coin Toss, presented by Andy Anderson

We are pleased to welcome Andy Anderson to present: “Behind the Scenes at the Sierra Avalanche Center: Why Avalanche Forecasting Is More than a Coin Toss.”

Many of us are regular readers of the Sierra Avalanche Center’s (SAC) avalanche forecast, which helps people make more informed decisions about backcountry travel each winter.
Come learn about how the forecasts are created, what tools and tests are used, and SAC’s plans for improving the forecasts in the future.  The presentation will start with the basics of forecasting, including how to read and use a forecast.

Andy Anderson, Avalanche Forecaster, at the Sierra Avalanche Center since 2006, also built and maintains their website, and websites for several other avalanche centers. Andy has been a ski patroller in the Northwest, an English teacher in Chile, a ski bum in the Tetons, and a climbing ranger in the Tetons, Mt. Rainier and Rocky Mountain National Park.
